Health risks in dipping into Garra Rufa Tanks

LIFESTYLE- Health risks in dipping into Garra Rufa Tanks

Garra Rufa’s natural habitat lies along the river beds in Eastern countries, such as Turkey, Syria, Iraq and Iran. This is the only fish applicable or used for this type of procedure other nationalities call it as Nibble fish, Kangal fish, and Bone fish. Garra Rufa was first seen in hospitals, known as The Doctor Fish because medical practitioners use them for treating various skin diseases such as the known Psoriasis.

Psoriasis is a type of skin condition which is called a chronic genetic disease, it is not really a skin disorder but it is known for its level of severity it can be in a form of reddish or scaly patches and can form and cover the entirety of a body part. Garra Rufa is really a help to those people suffering from psoriasis.

There are now many innovations in the use of this Doctor Fish, many spa centers and pedicure companies open and operate and are now serving their clients the experience of having fishes clean the soles of their feet, and it now became a booming industry, but how effective are these?

Studies show from California Microbial Disease Laboratory held October 2000 wherein they have held sanitation checks on these fish foot spa operators all over 5 districts in California and found out through tests and investigations, surveys conducted with the managers, owners and clients and even done sanitation checks on the machines and tanks and fishes the spa use, showed that there was an outbreak of “Mycobacterium fortuitum furunculosis” which affected customers using these foot spa innovation.

The effectiveness of the Garra Rufa being a fish doctor pulled its career down when used in the local spa businesses the reason for this is not mainly on the fish itself but on how the operators conduct these procedures.

During spa clients place their foot in a tub or tank full of water and Garra Rufa, cross contamination and bacteria build up happened when several costumers with different skin conditions use the same tank of water and the same fish one after the other and to those operating big time use it all at the same time. The tanks, tubes were not also properly cleaned and sanitized.

For this reason some states have already forbidden the use of this treatment in spas and nail salons.
Though it has health benefits such as it utilizes blood flow and treats skin diseases the effectiveness of the fish treatment when not treated properly now becomes a threat to the public.
