More than words, body language is a powerful way to assert our standing in this competitive world.
Body language makes up 80% of our daily communication with our faces projecting 250,000 emotions alone, not to mention the hand gestures and postures.
With the nonverbal communication eating up a high percentage, it is essential for everyone to know the ideas one may conceive when you make a certain gesture consciously or unconsciously.
With thousands of emotions and gesture, it is hard to keep track of them, especially with the characteristic of body language being spontaneous or natural for most.
To make the matter simple, here is the list of the most common body language we see and in need of improvement in order to come across as someone who is approachable and capable.
Maintain eye contact
Definitely the most common on the rule of thumbs it should be an instinct that keeping eye contact is a must when communicating. Still, we are yet to scratch it off on the list of reminders due to constant brush-off of this gesture.
To be fair, maintaining eye contact is a big step, especially for shy people. But that is what you need to do. Take the big step and transform yourself into one who is assertive and confident.
Start it by maintaining polite eye contact. (Meaning, don’t stare too long it borders to inappropriate. You might get sued.)
Keep the gadgets away
Nothing in need of elaboration, texting while talking to someone is simply disrespectful. If you want their respect, give it to them first.
Firm handshake and firm voice
There’s nothing than a firm handshake to give a good first impression. In the world of business,a handshake is one of the ways in weeding out the weak from the strong.
In a matter of seconds, you can be considered a possible asset to the company. Firm handshakes project a capable personality.
This is also the same for firm voice. A firm voice is neither loud, nor soft. It is clear, no stuttering, and confident.
Despite of sharing an amazing idea, you will be given less credit at best and not be heard at worst. The delivery of your thoughts will make a greater impact if stated well.
Relaxed and straight posture
Slouching like you want to blend in the walls will make you an easy target – definitely not a leader material. And if your argument is being the boss is not your goal anyway, well then good luck finding a job.
Even an employee of the lowest rank has requirements to fulfill and that includes reliability at work.
How will you handle that if simple attention will already have you bowing your head? Stand straight, pull back your shoulders, and keep your head up, but also make sure to keep your posture relaxed.
Avoid fidgeting
Nervous? Bored? Impatient? There are a number of ways to interpret fidgeting and none of them relates to positive emotion. Once you see your hands tapping the desk, stop them.
