“I have found that among its other benefits, giving liberates the soul of the giver” –Maya Angelou
Each one of us certainly was able to touch a life, donate something or share your time in different ways. It is surely a joyful feeling and a sense of fulfillment that we get every time we give without expecting something in return.
But, do you know that by giving, sharing and donating for a cause, you (the giver) actually receive more in return than the receiver?
• One of the many benefits of giving is developing a sense of bliss and meaningful purpose in life. Whenever you share your time volunteering or donating, you are actually experiencing a different kind of happiness. According to study, this noble behavior releases endorphins in the brain producing this good feeling (happiness). This good feeling activate regions of the brains that is related with social connections, pleasure and trust.
• Giving is also good for our health. An example of this is when you volunteer for a community project. The act of doing a physical activity is a form of exercise which we actually need to stay healthy. According to researchers, giving improves physical health and longevity because it reduces stress which is mostly the cause of numerous health issues. Research also shows that a positive social interaction improves good mental and emotional health.
• Giving also promotes cooperation and greater social connection to the community. Sociologists Brent Simpson and Robb Willer proposed that the generosity of an individual by giving to others is likely to be rewarded by the person you gave to or by someone else. The noble acts of giving promote a sense of trust and cooperation that strengthen our bonds to other people in our community.
• Giving, definitely has a lot of positive gain to the giver, receiver and to the community. It stimulates the feeling of gratitude that is integral to happiness and social bonds. It is apparently contagious as well. Giving can cause a ripple effect of generosity in the community. A study shows that when one person shows generosity, it inspires others to behave generously as well to other people.
So, in whatever form of generosity, you will not only make a difference in other people’s life but also with yourself. The smallest moral act of giving may be less important but in one way or another it transforms the life of the receiver and the giver.
