Can you imagine an ordinary diaper will make great changes to the usual gardening ideas? Thanks to Grant Thompson. He shared a gardening project on YouTube where any kind of diaper will turn into gardening gel.
The gardening gel is non-toxic, environmentally friendly and can cut watering schedule in half as it is absorbent. How to do it?
On a demo video, Thompson poured 4 cups of color blue water into a disposable diaper. He noted that either new or gently used diaper can be used for this project. When the diaper absorbed the water, he ripped the diaper open and dumped the contents into a bowl. He poured the remaining water into a bowl containing the diaper’s content. Then he mixed the content and it turned into hydro gel.
He packed some hydrogel into an airtight bag and put it into fridge to free overnight to make an improvised ice pack. Amazingly, the hydrogel ice pack didn’t leak. The colored hydrogel can be added into the soil of the plants, put on the top of the soil, or simply put the pure hydrogel into the vase to maintain the life of the plant – it would look stylish if the container or vase of the plant is a clear glass.
Thompson advised if working with plants or mixing it with the soil, it is better to use a clear hydrogel.
If you use a colorful a hydrogel, the plants might grow with same color of the hydrogel. To create super absorbent, super soil, use an adult diaper for making a hydrogel (just pour a water, then rip open the diaper, dumped the content into a bowl and mix them). There’s no need to put the clear hydrogel into a fridge as you can directly mix it to the potting soil. The super absorbent, super soil is light and fluffy.
For planting using super absorbent, super soil, add first an ordinary soil into a pot then put the plant and add the super absorbent, super soil and make sure it is packed with soil. Finish up by adding water once the plant is tight. With super absorbent, super soil, plant can go twice as long between watering, saving time and resources. No need to worry about overwatering as hydrogels infused in the soil so the excess water is quickly absorbed.
