Attending formal gatherings can be awkward at times. Okay, most of the time. The air of eloquence and elegance can be intimidating at times even to those who are accustomed with it. But getting on it the right way is not as hard as rocket science or as difficult as figuring out the algorithm. Worry no more because proper etiquette is no longer limited for the royals and the moneyed.
Never dread the black tie invitation again as these tips will help you slide through it smoothly.
Dress Accordingly.
Impression lasts. Dressing nicely gives the impression that you are courteous enough to prepare. It also makes you feel good. Feeling good from the inside brings out the confidence that cuts out any awkwardness away.
Hide the purse under.
This also works for cell phones, keys and other things you bring with you. Advisably, put it on your lap or the sides of your chair. This is a way of showing respect that connotes that your attention is all given to the person or people you are sitting with on the same table.
Speak Nicely.
Always, always be polite to your waiter and for the love of higher heavens, never yell. Make eye contact whenever someone is taking your order and do not hesitate to ask if there’s a part of the menu that you cannot pronounce – it happens!
Know your utensils.
In a formal table setting, those that are the furthest are the ones that are being used first. Remember to use two utensils on every course being served. Do not pick up the utensil if you accidentally dropped it on the floor. Have the attention of the waiter instead and asked for them to replace it for you. Once done, put the utensils atop the plate instead of placing it on the side.
Work with your Napkin.
Napkins should be placed on your lap and not tucked in your neck or the buttons on your shirt. Use the napkin in a blotting motion instead of wiping it all over your lips. Leave it lying on the left side of the plate once done eating.
Eat with Grace.
Avoid making unnecessary sound during the course of eating. Nothing is more disturbing that creating unwanted noise while dining. Eat in small proportion and do not speak while your mouth is full. When drinking, look into the cup, not over. Keep your arms and table away from the table and remember to sit up straight. Excuse your self when you need to leave the table.
