If you’re a fan of baking healthy food or you simply love eating them, chances are you’re familiar with every sweetener out there in every shelf of the supermarket in search for the just the right ingredient that is healthy without compromising your taste buds.
You may have already heard of blackstrap molasses and maybe on how it is healthier than other sweetener, too. If you do, let’s get down to facts that these beliefs are well grounded and for the first-timers – if there is any – let me convince you about this truth.
So, what are these blackstrap molasses? It is actually the by-product of a sugar cane being refined into table sugar after boiling it for the third time. This one type of molasses is the concentrated crystalline sucrose from the sugar.
Judging against corn syrup or your everyday refined table sugar, blackstrap molasses clearly have the advantage. Your corn syrup and table sugars contain only simple carbohydrates, as they are already stripped off of their nutrients due to chemical processes they undergo.
Speaking of processed food, it would be another wise idea to stay away from artificial sweeteners such as saccharine and aspartame. Aside from the label artificial – which already puts a big “WARNING” sign on these products – they lack all the health benefits you want for the long term and can even cause serious medical problems if taken excessively especially for those who have health issues.
Blackstrap molasses on the other hand will let you indulge, as it is rich in minerals such as manganese, copper, iron, calcium, potassium, magnesium, vitamin B6, and selenium. It also gives you richer and cleaner taste.
Stocking up on these should not be a problem as they are available in the market. However, it is advisable to keep blackstrap molasses for six months (for already opened containers) to one year (for still closed containers). Major producers of molasses include countries like India, Brazil, Taiwan, Thailand, Philippines and United States.
