We all can agree that summer is one of the most exciting seasons of the year. We tend to be out and about on the weeks when the sun is at its highest and making the most out of this blessing is of high priority.
There are a lot of activities to do which includes swimming, fishing, outdoor camping and trekking, barbecue parties, rave events, fun runs or just sitting on your very own balcony, sipping a cold lemon juice with your favorite books at hand.
No matter what the undertaking is, we harness fun from it. You would notice more people crowding streets and populating malls because the hassle of the rainy or snow season had been somehow forgotten.
But when the day comes to a close, we all find ourselves all too tired from spending too much time with the sun and we melt our nights sleeping as if we have sweated buckets during the day.
Keeping the body hydrated helps the heart more easily pump blood through the blood vessels to the muscles. And, it helps the muscles work efficiently. Dehydration can be a serious condition that can lead to problems ranging from swollen feet or a headache to life-threatening illnesses such as heat stroke. A person who perspires heavily will need to drink more than someone who doesn’t.
Certain medical conditions, such as diabetes or heart disease, may also mean you need to drink more water. People with cystic fibrosis have high concentrations of sodium in their sweat and also need to use caution to avoid dehydration. And some medications can act as diuretics, causing the body to lose more fluid. Hydration isn’t just important during physical activity.
Sitting in the sun on a hot or humid day, even if you aren’t exercising, can also cause your body to need more fluids. People, who have a heart condition, are older than 50 or overweight may also have to take extra precautions. It’s also a good thing to keep tabs on your hydration if you’re traveling.
Aside from being well-hydrated, we must also consider the type of clothes that we are wearing as this contributes to overall body temperature. On humid conditions, one must don outfits that are lightweight and loose.
Form-fitting garments and skintight pieces would constrain free flow of blood in your system and is not the most comfortable choices you might consider. It is also a fact that dark-colored clothing will absorb more heat so choosing lights and pastels would deflect it.
If you won’t be using an air conditioner this summer, be sure to have an electric fan handy. With a little bit of creativity, you can make a DIY air conditioner by placing a bowl of salted ice in front of a fan. As it melts, the ice will generate cold air, which the fan will then blow toward you.
You can also create a cross breeze in your home, by situating two fans at opposite windows, one bringing air in and one pushing air out. But be sure to wait for the cooler temperatures of evening.
During the summer, less is more. Put away the heavy duvet and opt instead for lightweight, breathable white cotton sheets. If you’re not one to sleep in the buff, pick nightclothes made of loose, airy, natural fibers.
On particularly hot nights, try wrapping an ice pack in a damp dish towel and sleeping with it between your wrists or thighs. Unplug any unnecessary electronics to cut down on external heat sources, and aim a fan in your direction. If you’re coupled up, you may consider banishing your partner to the far side of the bed. Ninety-degree nights are not the best for cuddling.
Some other practitioners also recommend chrysanthemum tea as one cool drink to clear the head and minimize heat in your body. Be creative in creating drinks that would not only soothe your parched throats but are pleasing to your taste buds as well. Eat fruits with high water content like watermelon and grapes.
And on top of it all, be as positive as you can no matter how irritating the withstanding heat might be. Your mind will do wonders for you that you never thought it can so always retain a peaceful state of mind as much as you can. Thinking of snow or raindrops won’t hurt when the heat is too much to bear.
