Teens all around the world don’t pay any heed about their finances just because they expect parents are there to take care of their extravagant budget.
This in turns create an unexpected (yet avoidable) burden on the family income. It is important to teach them about how to budget than putting emphasis on teaching about investment.
There are some Dos and Don’ts that you can follow in order to teach your children how to make his/her own budgeting.
Do
Start from very early age of your child, probably with a piggy bank. Keep in mind that no age is too young for your child to teach the importance of budgeting.
Saving habit eventually instigates budgeting. Kids love when any of their chores are rewarded with money. As a parent you should grab that opportunity to teach them that some of their money should be saved. Kids growing with this habit will automatically have the saving habit at their older age.
Inspire your kids to price shop as well as search for better bargains. You can do this by checking prices from different stores along with your children. This will in turn helps your kid re-asses how much they require any product. This habit could alone prevent kids from spending money on a frill that really isn’t necessary.
Don’t
No activity no allowance; that’s the rule of thumb for children who are in the process of learning budgeting. An allowance without any chore is like paying for vacation. Nobody in real world does that. So don’t make your children used to this unpractical stuff.
Set example by yourself that you can’t have all that you want. Explain to your kids that demands are unlimited but resources are limited. Living within what you earn & teaching the same to your children is a vital part of parenting.
Kids want so many things in their early age. But this doesn’t mean you will have to give them everything they want. If you continue to give children what they want, you are telling them that you don’t think they can earn it. This will create a vacuum of confidence in your children’s mind.
Confidence is build when we strive together to achieve a goal and eventually our effort pays off.
It is more important for your kids to learn how long it takes to save money for the ‘stuff’ they want than the ‘stuff’ itself. Educate your child the importance of budgeting by sticking to these simple-to-follow guidelines. And be sure saving and budgeting habit will refrain your kids to grow into money-savvy adults.
