Magnetic Therapy: Can it relieve pain?

how-does-magnet-therapy-work

As an alternative medical practice magnetic therapy is gaining popularity to alleviate pain along with other health concerns. Magnets are in our mattress, shoes, belts, bracelets and almost everywhere.

Magnetic therapy is among the fastest growing natural modalities for pain relief. This is because people suffering from pain increasingly disenchanted with painkillers and seeking alternative natural way of relief.

Magnetic therapy for pain relief is an age-old practice that can be linked back to third century—Greek physicians at that time used magnets for pain relief. Consequently, the therapy extends to middle ages and finally became popular in the US after the Civil War.

There must have some physiological effect on human body if magnet is to work against body pain. There must be some way so that magnet can influence body tissue, cells or blood over which they are applied.

Hence, the idea is to place magnets in close proximity to painful areas. Magnet will create a magnetic field within the body that alleviates pain. Although there is no conclusive evidence that magnets really work, however, research has proposed some influential possibilities.

A significant number of studies have shown that magnets cause changes in nerve cell function. Don’t get worried, magnets change it for good. This magnetic field hinders the pain signal to reach to the body part.

Some other theories have proved that pain relief through magnets is done by increased amount of blood flow & oxygen to body tissues. Even magnets may increase the body temperature all of a sudden in order to suppress the intensity of pain.

Magnets may also balance the death and growth proportion of cells. Studies elsewhere claim that magnets line up water molecules in our bodies thus prevent swelling and accelerate healing.

Through a review of 40 studies it is revealed that magnet therapy has positive impact on acupuncture points for different conditions. Those results were so compelling that researchers recommended magnet therapy for more acute pain.

On the flip side, the irony is there are just as much research exists to the contrary. In the year 2007 a meta-analysis of clinical trials was conducted on permanent magnets for pain relief.

The result was not at all satisfactory. In fact, it was found that magnet has nothing good to do on human body pain.

So what should we do…..

Magnets are usually thought of as a safe alternative to prescription drug. However, you have all the rights to be cynical with a ‘not fully proven’ device.

At this present era we are surrounded heavily by pseudoscience, unsupported claims as well as mischaracterization of what we do know as fact.

On the contrary, chances are they may be right for all the wrong reasons. After all we can’t easily ignore the examples where sanctimonious experts were wrong.

Well, it’s time to go with a healthy dose of skepticism. Consult with your healthcare professionals before opting out magnet therapy. Magnet therapy is totally unsafe for people with pacemakers, defibrillators, brain stimulator and insulin pumps in their body because magnet interferes with the normal functioning of these devices.

Don’t use it at the time of pregnancy because medical science just doesn’t know what magnets can do at conceive period. And most importantly, don’t use them all the time. It is better to deal with everything in moderation.
