The advent of social media, magazines, and movies to name a few has contributed in setting the standards high on what should be pleasing to the eye. The narrow definition of beauty nowadays has resulted too many people having negative body image.
More and more we are sucked into conforming into the ideals of the society and more often it affects us mentally and physically. Body image is defined as “the way you feel about your body and all of its part.” Your body image can be positive, negative, or both.
Perceiving yourself in a positive light is important as it contributes to your self-growth as a person physically and mentally. People with negative body image always see themselves lacking. They see their eyes too small or their nose too big.
They are usually self-conscious to the point where they stop enjoying the things they usually do like swimming for example, as they are afraid of showing their bodies. Jealousy towards more attractive people results from negative body image.
This does not promote self-growth as it usually leads to dissatisfaction, depression, anxiety, and an over-all negative respective.
Negative body image is not an immediate result after you look at yourself in the mirror. It was the gradual effect of criticisms, insults, and media exposure that unknowingly dictates the ideal appearance.
Turning your body image 180 degrees is not an easy feat especially if the ideals of the society has been ingrained to you. However, here are some advice while simple, has profound effect. Be Realistic.
Set your own standards that you think you can achieve. Stop chasing for something that is unachievable. You can’t always have her full, pouty lips or her chocolate doe eyes. Trying hard or using extreme means could potentially harm you.
Focus on your best qualities. Instead of whining about your too-small-this and too-big-that body parts, dwell on your best qualities. Instead of dissatisfaction, it will leave you feeling light and great.
Your radiant smile will attract people that will add to your virtual self-esteem bar. Surround yourself in a positive environment. Let go of people putting you down. Instead, immerse yourself in an environment such as with your friends and family.
However, there are cases that it’s your own family and friends that are contributing to your body image. Talk to them and let them understand your feelings.
Do something to improve your self-appearance. Not conforming to the ideals of the society does not mean you have to neglect your appearance and force yourself to like it. It won’t make you happy.
Improving your appearance will make you less prone to anxiety and depression.
You can try from staying fit to having a nose lift. Plastic surgery is not uncommon today. Just make sure that it is tried, tested, approved and will make you truly happy. Just like your negative body image, having a positive one is a gradual process.
Take little steps and don’t expect immediate results. You’ll be disappointed and leave you back to square one.
