Differentiating a boss from a leader

Handsome business man smiling

In every type of workplace, we all have someone in a higher seat than us, not unless you’re the owner of the company. This person is the one responsible in keeping the business all working the way it should be. All details are being seen by him/her and ensure that every employee under his/her wing is delivering what’s expected of them to do.

His/her presence on every decision to be made must turn-in the biggest impact to the end-result and it is him/her who would explain the pros and cons of every action to be carried out. He/she will give you instructions on what to do every single day, a reminder that your employment is under scrutiny most of the time.

He/she keeps everything organized, from planning to execution, and it his/her best interest if a plan has gone well and good. Just as the passage goes, every leader can be a boss but not all bosses can be a leader — listed below are some of the characteristics that you, my dear employee, can look into to see if your CEO is the best head of the office that you can have.

Effective leaders are born to lead than the rule. On every type of risk that you or your department would be taking, your superior is expected to be on the front of the pack. He/she would be leading you to row the boat and not just at the backdrop seeing you all agitated and stressed-out.

They see to it that all the things that you must do within a project will be given the attention that it deserves. Leaders are there to balance it out for the team, ask for suggestions in enriching his original idea and not just sticking to then demand his employees do what they commanded.

Listening is important to a great leader, without this skill, then it is expected that the machines are working for the company and not intelligent, always capable human beings.

In every situation taken, there will be moments of highs and lows. If your superior gets frustrated on a deadline being near and the team hasn’t been producing the exact expectations, then prep yourself for endless litanies of unprofessionalism and disbelief.

Leaders are there to motivate you in pushing more rather than terrifying employees for a crammed finish. Awesome heads also have this innate capability to learn and listen to his/her employees most of the time.

Your superior is considered a ‘boss’ when he/she just expect you to do a thing by hook or by crook and ignoring every fruitful effort that you have exerted.

Whether it’s a win or lose, leaders take part of it and not just stay on the outskirts. They celebrate with you when you achieved something and never stray away to cover up his/her name when a flunk is expected to be seen at the end.

Leaders also offer perspective and criticisms to bring-out the best in you. Scolding and shouting and public aggravation is not only unprofessional, but something that displays how immature your supposed leader is.

Lastly, great and purposive leaders look at his employees at the same level as they are. The establishment of equality amongst your team members is one priority that he/she is securing.

Communication is open and still respectful in such a way everyone knows the borderline.
