Reconnect, Renew, Reunion

friends-party

Class reunions are held in commemoration of our good old school days, and it is one event we all thrillingly look forward to. A couple of weeks ago, just out of the blue, I happened to glance at a familiar class photo on Facebook.

I later on realized that I was part of that class. Through a series of conversation and planning, I will soon be attending our own high school class reunion this coming month of May.

My first thoughts were, what can people find interesting in seeing and hearing from people you’ve almost forgotten? But in all honesty, I can’t contain my excitement about it.

I graduated from Section 2 of the class of 1995, Camp General Emilio Aguinaldo High School, Quezon City, Philippines. Hey, you do the math.

Well the first thing I realized is that there are many familiar people, which I recognize the names of until now. Most seem to be undecided, or a little reluctant in saying anything or committing themselves to it.

Then some of us start communicating with each other. The burgeoning effect was remarkable, to say the least. Chat rooms opened up on Facebook. We started being interactive with each other and, some conversations kept going 24 hours. It was quite a shuddering experience.

A class reunion is usually held on or around a memorable school founding anniversary and at a venue such as the original school or at a nearby place that also has memories for the class.

But ours was planned in the most unexpected time, and in an abrupt manner, and this will be steered in a private resort, not in our old institute.

It has been years since I have seen my classmates, and most of them will come home from different parts of the globe while the rest never really left the country.

It’s one momentous occasion where we flaunt everything, some might have big careers or established families of their own and we all want to show them off.

Some might have gained a ton of weight and don’t look so great anymore or some might have transformed or evolved beautifully. It doesn’t really matter.

Your old friends are still your old friends anyway. This should be a cherished event and it will unquestionably be.

Along with it, there is going to be something you will identify as career envy, spouse envy, or even family envy. Nevertheless, we will all try to remember only the good things about high school, though we can never prevent bringing back old crushes, slum book secrets, old love teams, or even old clashes.

There is no problem if we do some preparations for the said event. Sure we can get a new hairdo, get a manicure and pedicure, and, by all means, lose that upsetting 5 or more pounds.

Be sure your clothes are of the latest style or wear something comfortable. Leave your school guises behind and look back on your school days as a completely different person that you hope your old friends will want to be friends with again. Try not to let it drive you into anxiety. Remember they aren’t the same either.

Remember, you are not the only one who has been out of school all these years. No one else will likely look just exactly the same as they did way back school days. What will transpire on that very day, I believe, will be rekindling, a great rejuvenation.

Perhaps, after many years of living with dormant dreams, the drive can be rekindled, and, this time with some mature living and experience behind it which will be brought about by old memories, yet to be awaken.
