High heel shoes: The hidden cost to your body of those extra inches

high-heels-health

High heel shoes can make you look fashionable and feel taller. However, the hidden cost that your body bears is excruciating pain in leg and back.

Medical research suggests that many women suffer permanent problems as a consequence of prolonged exposure of ‘killer’ heels. Most of the cases the root of all damages is the increased pressure high heels put on the ball of the foot.

Pressure will increase proportionately with the height of heels. The knee, back and leg tendons can be damaged as well.

Posture: High heeled shoes give rise to a plantarflexed position thus placing an increased amount of pressure on the forefoot. As a consequence you need to adjust the rest of your body in order to maintain the balance. In effect, the upper part of your body leans back to keep you balanced. Your posture is distorted because this isn’t a normal standing position.

Body balance: Walking in a high heel shoe is like teetering on a beam. Indeed, there is no support to hold you if you start to fall. While walking with high heeled shoes your foot & ankle move in a supinated position which puts you at high risk for losing the balance.

Back: Our spinal cord is s-shaped in order to absorb the shock on the vertebrae. High heel shoes can flatten the lumbar spine and posterior displacement of the thoracic (mid-back) spine. As you lean forward because of high heel the body decreases the forward curve of the lower back in an attempt to keep you in line. The total process throws your whole body-hips, shoulders, back & spine out of alignment.

Knee: Knee osteoarthritis is twice as common in women who use high heel shoes frequently. This is because the knee stays bent while the tibia turns inward when you wear high heel shoes. As a result a compressive force is created on the inner part of the knee. Moreover, high heel extends the distance from the floor to the knee that result into increased knee torque. All these phenomenon leads to one anomaly-knee osteoarthritis.

Ankles: The power and motion of the ankle joint restrict to a greater extent because of the high heels. Heel height shortens the calf muscles which in turn loses power when trying to push the foot off of the ground. Due to high heels a pull of the Achilles tendon where it attaches on the back of heel bone may initiate. This may cause a common ankle damage known as Achilles tendonitis.

Our body is the perfect example of precision alignment. If anything is distorted you are at a risk of blowing all of it. Thus it is suggested that you only wear high heels in special occasions with a heel height of 1-1.5inches only. Your body will be thankful to you and you will save money on trips to the podiatrist’s chamber.
