I am a huge aficionado of my mom when it comes to cooking. It has been her technique to putting twists to traditional home-made dishes which make them all the more sumptuous and well craved for.
My mom isn’t a professional cook but I guess all moms have this intrinsic aptitude in doing their thing in their most favorite part of the house, the kitchen. Through the years she has experimented on a lot of recipes, many of which turned out to be the family’s favorites.
One recipe I’m talking about is her Sweet and Sour Banana Buds Veggie Balls. Yup you’ve read it right; this recipe’s main ingredient is Banana Buds. This recipe has won her a few local cooking competitions as well.
Banana Bud meatballs is easy to cook; with just a few and humble ingredients to make the veggie balls to begin with. Of course, the only dull and bothersome part of the process is cleaning the banana blossoms by removing the sap.
This procedure is very important when cooking fresh banana blossoms because the sap is a bit bitter, and it can affect the taste of the whole dish when not thoroughly cleansed.
For the veggie balls, we will need 1 medium sized fresh banana bud, seasonings like salt, pepper, and soy sauce. Spices like garlic, onions and bell pepper. We will also need flour and 2 pieces of eggs.
For the cooking procedure, first and foremost we need to finely chop the banana blossoms and mix it with an ample amount of rock salt then set aside for 10 minutes.
Squeeze the banana blossoms with your bare, clean hands until the sap has been removed. You can also use a piece of cloth to squeeze the sap out. Wash it with warm water after and squeeze it again to remove excess water.
In a bowl, beat the eggs and add the banana blossoms, minced onion, garlic, bell pepper, flour, salt and pepper. After attaining the texture that we prefer, form the banana blossom mixture into balls like the shape of regular meatballs then coat them with flour.
The veggie balls should be in small to medium size so they will be evenly cooked inside and out. Deep fry them on medium heat until golden brown. Strain the excess oil and serve hot with ketchup or sweet chili sauce.
This is such an easy-to-cook and healthy recipe that kids and the old alike would certainly feast on.
