Everyone will surely agree that there are times we find plain regular water boring and would want to satisfy ourselves with flavored drinks such as soda, fruit flavored drinks and carbonated or sparkling water.
However, the thought of drinking these beverages would only bring bad effect to your health and might just be a waste of money. Experts would actually recommend you to drink carbonated water as a healthful alternative if you feel like drinking soda to satisfy yourself.
Carbonated water is fizzy water with dissolved carbon dioxide. This is a refreshing sparkling beverage that has few health benefits and can hydrate as much as regular water. But of course water is much healthier than sparkling water. When it comes to texture and taste, carbonated water is the same as soda but definitely does not have the same negative effect.
One of the health benefits we can get from carbonated water is that it helps for hydration. It is important for us to stay hydrated. If you feel thirsty water or carbonated water is the best solution to satisfy you especially if you do not get enough water every day. Carbonated water also helps prevent retention of excess water in the body that makes you bloated. It helps move the nutrients in your body. Also, carbonated water helps improve indigestion and constipation, bloating, vomiting and nausea.
On the other hand, claims such as carbonated water does not hydrate well, reduces bone density, erodes teeth enamel, irritates stomach, and does not flush toxins out of the body and that it is high in sodium are actually false. Carbonated water actually hydrates just as well as regular water because the seltzer water is plain water that is artificially carbonated.
According to a study conducted in 2006, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that decreased bone density in older women was associated with carbonated cola or soda but not with non-cola carbonated drinks. It is also not true that carbonated water is high in sodium because most seltzer has zero sodium and will not affect your blood pressure.
No one can contest the fact that our body needs plain water since it is much healthier than any other beverages or drinks. It is therefore recommended that you drink plenty of plain water, but we also cannot discount the fact that carbonated water is a good alternative that has health benefit.
