Defining permissive parenting

permissive parenting (1)

Rearing a child is a welcomed activity especially for couples and individuals who feel that they are ready for a chapter in life called ‘parenthood’. While this connotes a promising future for some, let us not forget that being a parent and raising a kid is accompanied by paramount responsibility and maturity.

With the advancement of education, research and science, psychologists are able to classify different kinds of parenting and identify which style is best to deliver a good outcome not only for children, but also for the family as a whole.

Many are not in favor of permissive parenting – a style that is defined as non-demanding and does not have a defined set of rules unlike other classifications like of authoritative parenting. To some, permissive parenting creates a home where kids are raised out of bribery and that the line between parents and children are blurred.

In this style, parents become more of a friend to their children instead of their guardian. According to some people, this setting will not invoke respect for authority and rules because the image of power and command isn’t defined well. Parents who believe that permissive parenting is the way to go need to be careful especially in teaching their kids to respect authority as there is a distinct structure that needs to be followed in the bigger world outside of the home.

While there are some who disagree with this style, those who are in favor of it say that permissive parenting is equivalent to positive parenting. This is a more relaxed approach that is full of nurturing and affection. Due to the eased-up framework of the relationship between parents and their children, moms and dads can gain the favor of their kids, simultaneously claiming their trust without actually asking for it.

Permissive parenting can also raise responsible and independent kids as they are given the freedom to decide for themselves. The freedom granted to them allows them to experience wins and losses that foster learning in each and every important situation they encounter.
