Women who are in their menopausal stage may experience a quick moment of feeling hot accompanied by sweating and a fast heart rate sometimes. While this occurrence is known to be natural and is faced by a majority of ladies in their late forties and early fifties, not all understand this phase which is why it is important to educate women who are already undergoing menopause.
While it is already considered normal to undergo hot flushes, the main cause still remains unknown. During the menopausal stage, the hormonal composition of the body changes and affects central thermoregulation resulting in sweating. Hot flushes can occur at any time of the day, but most instances are reported to happen at night.
The early signs of menopause are characterized by the presence of hot flushes. It usually starts a year before the last period happens. But having your last menstruation doesn’t mean that hot flushes will end there. Studies show that hot flushes still happen several years after the last period, which is why knowing about this phenomenon is important to help women grasp the meaning of this phase that happens during the said stage in their life.
Because of the abnormal disorder of hormones, hot flushes, though not directly the root cause, can also be accompanied by other menopausal symptoms such as depression, lack of focus and sleep disturbance. These are some of the reasons why women who are in this phase tend to be moody and emotional.
There is no direct cure for hot flushes, but there are some preventive measures to alleviate them. To diminish the episodes if not avoid them completely, try staying away from caffeine, alcohol and smoking. Wearing comfortable clothes in cool fabrics can also help as hot flushes are paired with sweating. Allow your body to breathe by wearing loose fitting garments and avoiding crowded places.
Should hot flushes become too disturbing, seek medical help and get the opinion of your doctor about getting hormone replacement therapy. It will not only alleviate the occurrence of hot flushes as it will also help with other symptoms such as mood swings.
