Be thankful for the wonders of saliva

wonders of saliva (1)

Saliva may not hold one of the fanciest perceptions in the body, but this underrated part of the human anatomy holds one of the most impressive tasks that only this fluid can perform. It may appear gross, but do not underestimate the importance of its presence in your everyday life.

That liquid that permeates the insides of your mouth is there for a reason. Saliva’s composition is 99% water produced by salivary glands found in the mouth. Spit is responsible for protecting and lubricating the teeth, tongue and gums. It has antibacterial properties that eliminate the shallow buildup of bacteria, which is the main cause of cavities and other mouth related illnesses.

This must’ve been a reason why idioms about licking wounds are found in the English language. Since saliva is mainly composed of water, having the right amount to maintain the ideal environment surrounding the insides of the mouth is important.

Not only does it serve as the steering wheel for food to be transported from the gate through the pathway down to the processing arena, saliva jumpstarts the digestive process by tearing down starches and fats. A person with a dry mouth cannot taste food extensively. This is because the chemicals in the food you chew has to mix with saliva in order for the taste buds to detect the distinct flavors found in your food.

Aside from being hydrated and drinking enough water, we should also observe practices that will keep the ideal balance of saliva in the mouth.

We know how dangerous smoking is to our overall health, but short term effects include drying up the mouth. This is one of the common reasons why people who smoke often have bad breath.

Another reason why the mouth dries up is because of improper breathing. Make sure to inhale through the diaphragm from the nose instead of through the mouth.
