Best home remedies to stop hiccups

hiccups

Hiccup is completely involuntary and can surface at any time without any consent. Thus hiccup can be annoying and irritating to deal with.

Generally this incident doesn’t require any medical treatment and goes away after a few minutes. But if it lasts for more than half an hour you need some intervention.

Our diaphragm muscle helps us with inhaling as well as exhaling. If the diaphragm gets obstructed due to the presence of certain materials our vocal cords get shut.

Consequently, air gets trapped in our throat and in every two seconds, we begin to make a ‘hic’ sound.

Hiccups can be put to rest with age old grandma’s remedy which is to drink few glasses of water at a time. If it doesn’t, try these simple and harmless techniques to stop hiccups instantly.

Drink water by straw with plugged ears

Take a glass of cold water with straw and tell a friend to block both of your ears. At the time of hiccup our vagus or phrenic nerves get irritated.

Drinking water with plugged ears can stimulate these nerves and allows them to normally function again. Branches of our vagus nerve end into the auditory system.

Therefore, putting fingers in ear holes can stimulate the nerve endings that translate into seizing hiccups.

Sugar and red wine for hiccups

Take one tablespoon of sugar and add few drops of red wine vinegar in it. It would make a horrible taste but just gulp it down. And you will find your hiccups in history!

If you can’t take that for horrible taste there is another way to treat hiccup by using just sugar. Take a tablespoon of sugar and keep it right at the back of your mouth where our taste buds for sourness remains.

Leaving a significant amount of sugar there will cause them a violent start, thereby stopping the other involuntary act like hiccup.

Pull your tongue out

Sounds like a bit rude to do in public. However, this bizarre technique can stop your hiccup almost instantly. Medical science says pulling out tongue helps to stimulate the vagus nerve and ease the diaphragm spasms. It also helps to avoid gag reflexes.

Hold your breath

Plug your ears with hands and then take a deep inhale so that the abdomen swells like a balloon. Hold your breath as long as you can while remaining at this position. Repeat the process twice to stop hiccups.

You can exercise this technique while drinking water as well. Take water while holding your breath. Continue this process as long as you can.

Use a paper bag

Brown paper bag is a very handy thing in stopping hiccups. Put a brown paper bag over your nose along with mouth.

Keep breathing in that way as long as you don’t feel shortness of breath. This technique will effectively stop hiccups as the carbon dioxide imbalance in the blood would be rectified through this process.

Hiccups are natural resistance of the body to irritants. Almost every time you don’t even need any home remedy technique to stop hiccup.

If your hiccup continues for several minutes only then you will need to apply these effective techniques. Keep in mind that if for any reason your hiccup continues for about an hour, don’t be late to seek medical advice.
